HAVEN'T HEARD?

Ethereal Trap

Face of the ‘New Skool‘ of SA Hip-Hop Brotherkupa just dropped his latest EP ‘?‘, including the immaculately crafted CRTVSHOTS-directed music video for the euphoric ‘200 HP‘. Leaning more into melodic and synth-driven production whilst retaining the distinctive vocal stylings and thundering 808s he’s known for, the album, which dropped on his 20th birthday, reflects an artistic coming of age. Collabs include pioneers of the new wave Blckxie, jaykatana and K1llBrady. In the 15-minute runtime Brotherkupa manages to showcase his range and dynamism, going between bass-heavy Trap bangers and more laidback vibes in what feels like a victory lap for this young superstar in the making.

Brotherkupa

Brotherkupa is one of the most exciting young rappers in SA, having quickly established himself as a voice of the new generation since his first release ‘SWGBCK‘, in 2020. He has set himself apart with his ultramodern sound that fuses bass-heavy Trap elements with more melodic synth-infused sounds, and tells stories that the youth can relate to. I was lucky enough to catch Brotherkupa performing at a gig near the end of last year, and his relentless energy performing live brought another dimension to tracks like ‘Brazil 2‘, ‘Gqom Freestyle‘ and ‘YOUNGKUPA‘.
