Intrusive Thoughts Have Arrived On The Scene With Their Irresistibly Catchy Yet Moving Debut.

I first heard the dreamy, guitar-driven sounds of Intrusive Thoughts last October when they graced our FTDS High Tide stage with their raw and irresistible energy. Comprising of lead vocalist and guitarist Ryan Stopforth, lead guitarist Leonid Ozemblovskii, and backing vocalist and bassist James Nevin, the band had me captivated with their sound that simultaneously conjures up 2000s Indie Nostalgia while feeling fresh and authentically Cape Townian. Their emotionally driven performance really stuck with me, and about six months later, I was thrilled to learn that the band were gearing up for their debut release ‘Take It Easy’.

The track is a laid-back yet quietly riveting introduction to the band’s sound, which draws from the psychedelic-tinged Pop of MGMT, the slick crooning Indie Pop of The Plastics, along with the eclectic and irresistibly catchy early 2000s Alternative soundscape of Vampire Weekend mixed with just a bit of 2015’s Dope Lemon. Instrumentally, the track is characterised by a melodic bass guitar riff and soaring lead riff that intertwine deliciously and are supported by a metronomic drum pattern. Ryan’s melancholy vocals are a perfect complement to the sweetly nostalgic production, and James’ backing vocals add a fullness and layering to the track, which works a treat.

Intrusive Thoughts - 'Take It Easy' Review

Beneath its catchiness, ‘Take It Easy’ hides a thoughtful undercurrent as its lyrics dive into the feeling of being in the early stages of a romance and catching feelings that you’re not ready to admit you have. I’m sure many of us can relate to the chaotic and at times confusing nature of grappling with these kinds of feelings, especially in an age where situationships and flings are the norm and commitment feels scary. At the same time, the thrill of the ensuing chaos is captured deftly, reminding us that it isn’t all doom and gloom.

Intrusive Thoughts have announced themselves to the scene in glowing fashion with a debut that is catchy, richly layered, and feels like the soundtrack to a road trip up the beautiful Western Cape coastline. I’m sure the future will hold a lot more heartfelt tunes with immaculate chemistry from the band. If this sounds like your cup of tea, be sure to give ‘Take It Easy’ a listen on your streaming platform of choice.
