“I’m your mam, mamma, mammiest its basic education. Degrees can’t compare to my trappe van vergeslayking”.

Buh‘s new single ‘trappe van vergeslayking’ shows us that Afrikaans class doesn’t have to be boring with some jaw-droppingly funny lines stemming from degrees of comparison.

The track’s experimental Electro Pop production means it’s not your dad’s comedy song but a much sleeker sonic beast. The new single from the multitalented artist, producer and comedian is hilarious in typical Buh fashion, but her production chops take things to the next level.

The heavy basslines wouldn’t feel out of place on a PHFat track and the pulsating synthlines intertwine to continue that grungy feel, while some new wave-esque keyboard notes provide a nice touch of contrast. According to Buh, this darker somewhat Hip-Hop influenced sound draws inspiration from the likes of Moonchild Sanelly, K.O and Maglera Doe Boy. Buh’s vocals alternate between her sardonic yet melodic delivery for the main portion of the verse with glitchy hyperpop-esque moments that make this a treffer for the internet generation.

Buh - 'trappe van vergeslayking'

Buh (also known as Buhduhbuhduh) has made her name as one of South Africa’s funniest content creators on Instagram and TikTok with her hilarious 5-10 sec daily videos where she comes up with some of the silliest and most creative puns along with some great musical comedy. Over the past few years Buh has also been putting out satirical tracks such as the Checkers themed viral hit ‘Sixty 69‘ and ‘skrrt darren‘ (a Hyperpop ode to the legend of Kurt Darren).

On all these tracks, her immaculate production and incredible ability as a vocalist show that her talent extends far past making songs that are purely comedy tracks. When done right, music and comedy can come together to create a special hybrid that is simultaneously incredibly funny while being genuinely great musically.

This can take shape in a multitude of ways, from Ween and Bloodhound Gang to Garfunkel and Oates, or in a slightly different way, Carrie Brownstein’s hilarious roles on shows like Portlandia after and during her acclaimed career as part of Punk Rock outfit Sleater-Kinney. In recent years, we’ve also seen many an online comedian succesfully make the jump to music.

And while Buh‘s music catalogue does extend back a few years and is filled with gems, this feels like it could be the track that gets her songwriting and production talent the attention it deserves. I could see this track appealing to fans of M.I.A, Kreayshawn, and Moonchild Sanelly among others. I highly recommend giving this absolute bop a listen as soon as you can.
