Up and Coming Soul Pop Singer-Songwriter Kristi Lowe Lays Herself Bare With Vulnerable Debut Album.
Last week, Cape Town-based singer-songwriter Kristi Lowe dropped her long-awaited debut album ‘a glimpse inside my mind’, which finds her laying herself bare in exploring love, grief, womanhood, and personal rebirth. The eight-track album is rich in storytelling and instrumentation, blending soulful Jazz and R&B sounds with pop hit-making sensibilities. Each song brings the listener into a specific moment of Kristi’s life through her vulnerable, confessional delivery. Her lyrics are raw yet poetic, carried by a voice that’s as rich and soulful as it is intimate and disarming.
“Music is where I go to feel, to grieve, to love, and to heal. This album is a reflection of that. Every lyric is a page from my life, every melody a moment I’ve lived. I hope it resonates with people and makes them feel seen,” says Kristi.
Opening track ‘I’m Fine.’ is a brutally honest ballad about grief, resilience, and the quiet pain behind pretending we are fine when we are anything but. The production is driven by gentle acoustic guitar, driving drums and haunting piano notes, which combine with Kristi‘s impassioned vocals to tug at the heartstrings. ‘Medicated’ with mental health and grief, pairing honest lyrics with contrasting dreamlike melodies. ‘Can’t Hold Me Down’ is a power ballad taking listeners on a journey of reclamation.
‘Being a Woman’ is a powerful reflection on the contradictions and expectations placed on women in society. The jazz-infused track is both a personal statement and a universal anthem for every woman who has ever been told she is ‘too much’, ‘not enough’, or somehow both at the same time.
The title track, “Glimpse Inside My Mind,” captures the vulnerability of overthinking, contrasted with laid-back, soulful tones. ‘Don’t Play It Cool’ an upbeat, retro-inspired track with a killer sax solo, captures the thrill of instant attraction and playful flirtation. ‘Time With You’ offers a joyful, romantic highlight, bright, and infectious. Bold, bass-driven closer ‘Narcissist’s Playbook’, confronts manipulation and betrayal with clarity and power and delivers some powerful guitar riffs.
From beginning to end ‘a glimpse inside my mind‘ is a gripping debut album that weaves an emotionally moving interconnected thread throughout. Kristi Lowe‘s ability to capture her own experiences with grief, mental health struggles and love in a way that is poignant and relatable makes it hard not to feel each and every emotion she experiences. Having recently returned from a sold-out UK tour, the release poises her as one of SA’s most exciting upcoming Pop voices.
