Kila G Reflects On Love And Longing On Soulful New Single “Kutheni”.
One of the most exciting voices in the Cape Town music scene, Kila G, has returned with a soulful new single, ‘Kutheni‘, featuring fellow R&B sensation Stanley Branson. The track, which poignantly explores the subtle tension of drifting apart in a relationship, serves as the lead single to his upcoming project Distorted Closure, which is slated be his most personal and sonically explorative project yet. Before Kila G‘s verse had even begun, I was immediately drawn in by the silky smooth Jazz-infused production driven by rhythmic drums, delicate strings, and airy synth lines. When he made his entrance, I was at once enthralled by the silky velvet textures of his vocals and the deep well of emotion in his delivery.
As Kila G sings, “I hate the fact that you know me. People can see that we’re growing apart, but I know the sex feels holy. It was just me and you from start,” you can feel the pain in his voice as he longs for the deep connection he and his partner once shared. Stanley Branson‘s verse fits in seamlessly as he continues the themes of trying to hold on to this last spark in a dwindling relationship in his crooning tone pleading, “So when I hold you close. Hands on your waist, asking you ‘are you mine?’ Don’t wonder, don’t stutter”.
With its irresistible melodies and poignant lyrics, “Kutheni” encapsulates the feeling of wanting to communicate with a partner while grappling with an unshakeable sense that something is off. There are no concrete issues, just an unspoken desperation to mend the invisible rift. Kila G describes “Kutheni” as a plea to reconnect and retrace the steps of love: “It’s about that bittersweet moment when everything feels fine, yet something is subtly wrong.”
Set for release this year, Distorted Closure will showcase Kila G’s distinct sound, and after this offering, I will be eagerly awaiting its release. “Kutheni” is out on all major streaming platforms, so go give it a listen and keep your ears peeled for the full project.
