Jaxobz Hints At A New Sound With A Biting EDM/Rock Crossover.
What do you get when you cross Daft Punk with 2hollis and a touch of Paris Texas? You get a track that bridges the sonic divide between two seemingly disparate genres in a way that feels sleek, effortless and has a level of energy that will have moshpits going mad. Jaxobz‘ latest release, “Teeth”, is the dynamic lead single and introduction to the sound he will be bringing on his upcoming EP of the same title. I am already extremely intrigued to see how this new direction plays out over an extended length, but the just over two-minute runtime of this track has me dying to hear more.
The production feels like endless serotonin with its exhilarating distorted guitar riffs, a synth line that wouldn’t feel out of place in a French House track from the early 00’s, and a skitteringly rapid drum pattern, and a Hyperpop-esque frenetic energy. From the moment Jaxobz delivers the lines “I think I spilled your wine on the dance floor, I said there’s too much cocaine on the dance floor,” it feels like you as the listener are stepping into a massive rave replete with blaring Funktion Ones, sweating masses absolutely losing their minds on the dancefloor, and overall relentless excitement and chaos emanating throughout.
Jaxobz‘ melodic, autotuned vocals and rapid delivery further add to the hedonism-fuelled warehouse party-esque atmosphere of the track. The chorus of “Sharp teeth huh huh, Shark teeth huh huh,” is an irresistibly catchy earworm, emphasised by punchy adlibs. There is also an undeniably video game soundtrack sort of feel to the track, thanks to some Eurodance-esque moments which I can imagine fitting into the worlds of Final Fantasy or Tekken. Jaxobz also taps into anime imagery with lyrics like “Blue eyes she slayed like a silver sword“, a reference to Mizu, the protagonist of Blue Eye Samurai.
I feel Jaxobz has done an excellent job of evolving the Hyperpop-Rage sound he has perfected, whilst bringing in some new and refreshing elements such as the EDM revival style that 2hollis has helped popularise. Between his last full-length EP ‘Octupus Salad‘ in 2023, he has already refined his sound and grown immensely as both a producer and artist with recent releases like the Swoger collaboration ‘Snake Skin!‘ and the more rock-infused ‘Tonight Tonight’. If you enjoy 2000’s EDM and House or Rap-rock fusions then this is the track for you, and I suggest you stay posted for the full EP’s release.
