Empathy In The Age Of Apathy.

Psychopaths get richer and richer as the world burns more and more. Soot Sprite‘s ‘Wield Your Hope Like A Weapon’ is a cry against apathy in a world where it’s common not to care, (“It’s not that deep”) being a saying heard all too often. How do we fight back against the overwhelming lack of humanity in a world so jaded?

Keeping hope in these trying times is one of the most difficult things we can do, “It’s like wading through syrup.” however, viewing hope from the perspective of a weapon something that can be used to fight against the coldness of the world is one of the strongest attributes we can have in our current present. The track begins with Sean Mariner‘s heavy bass sitting you down. The atmosphere feels warm and punchy, while still keeping an air of iciness

Elise Cook’s vocals and hard hitting imagery immerse you into the track further, “Keep your head high. Ignore the death knell. Embrace the fire. We live in hell,” alongside Sam Cother’s drums putting you into a chaotic trance. It is important that we don’t lose that hope, because when we feel like we can’t do anything that’s when they’ve won, and we can’t let that happen.

Since starting in 2018 as a one-woman bedroom pop project, Soot Sprite has grown into a 3 person Alt Indie Shoegaze group taking inspirations from the likes of Sweet Pill to Soccer Mommy. Over the course of listening to this single, Soot Sprite has given me a lot to think about, weaving their ideas into music in a very accessible manner, continuing to progress their sound in immersive and introspective ways. I can’t wait to see how they evolve further as a group.
