Audessey to the world! Acclaimed Cape Townian musicians Dillon Birns and Themba Bosch, of Year Of Dogs, have just released their deliciously dreamy debut single ‘Simplicity‘. The track combines ethereal synths, melodic guitar lines, and arpeggiated melodies straight out of a Sci-Fi soundtrack with heartfelt lyrics about embracing your emotions and openly expressing your love to the people who matter to you. Themba‘s poignant vocal appeal made me want to run to hug my friends, parents, siblings and girlfriend and let them know how much I love them all.

From the second the opening synth-line floated through to my ears, I was lured in and once the irresistibly groovy bassline and driving drum machine came through, I was hooked. The track simultaneously evokes feelings of futurism whilst transporting you into a neon-pink-hued 80’s Miami house party. The laidback yet groovy melodies also feel like the perfect soundtrack to a gorgeous Cape Town summer’s day spent lounging at the beach before sundowners at a picturesque location with the orange tinted backdrop of sunset.

Audessey came about as a project during an indefinite hiatus from their Indie Rock band Year Of Dogs, as Birns and Bosch were eager to continue making music together. However, not wanting to replace their drummer and singer they began reworking older material by looping, layering and reimagining tracks with an electronic twist. Over several months, this experiment evolved into a project of its own, built on creative freedom, curiosity and the joy of making music that is engaging both to play and to hear.

After this delightful day-dream of a first offering, you might be asking, “How long do we have to wait for more Audessey?” Thankfully, the answer is “Not very long!” with ‘Simplicity‘ serving as the lead single to an upcoming 4-track debut EP. I, for one can’t wait to hear more gorgeous synths, groovy bass lines and sincere vocals from this dynamic duo.
