The Cape Town Artist L3bby put his hat in the ring of ‘luxury and dirty‘ hip hop with the lead single for his latest album ‘Swagcentric,’ a hard-hitting portrait of a glamour-filled lifestyle of a youth in the creative centre of South Africa. L3bby’s raps capture the swagger and allure of shiny suit era of hip-hop, bringing all the best parts of that time to the modern era, where BB Simon replaces shiny leather and authenticity supercedes ego. L3bby’s whole project, Mode Creation Music, works as a nostalgic blending of influences that uses modern production as a springboard to make something wholly unique to the South African hip-hop sound.

L3bby is a Cape Town rapper who repeatedly showcases his skill in the alternative hip-hop spaces, and his curation of ethereal soundscapes through his avant-garde production, and takes on various sounds in hip-hop, such as the nostalgic sounds of the 2010s Swag era featured in his latest album ‘Mode Creation Music’, and the more breakbeat-oriented jams in his SilkRoad duology. The same duology, which functions as an excellent showcase of L3bby’s talent as a curator of features and sounds, as his instrumental work is the perfect canvas for artists such as himself, Meccamind, @Passionpanther, and Shenge to deliver stellar performances. I am interested in seeing what L3bby has in store for us in the future.
